Australia's Pet Ownership Reaches 73%, Signaling Strong Demand for Quality Pet Products

June 24, 2026

According to the latest Pets in Australia report released by Animal Medicines Australia (AMA), pet ownership in Australia has risen to 73% of households, with around 7.7 million households owning pets and a total pet population of approximately 31.6 million. The figures highlight the continued strength and resilience of the Australian pet market.

Dogs remain the leading pet category, with 49% of households owning at least one dog, while cats rank second at 34%. Fish, birds, and other pet categories have also maintained stable ownership levels, reflecting a broad and diverse demand base across the market.

The report further shows that annual pet-related spending in Australia has reached an estimated AUD 21.3 billion. Pet food remains the largest segment at around AUD 9.8 billion, while veterinary services, accessories, and pet insurance also account for an important share of spending. This indicates that Australian consumers continue to place strong value on pet wellbeing, daily care, and quality-oriented products.

Although rising living costs have led some pet owners to delay certain veterinary care and routine treatments, the overall market outlook remains positive. As pets continue to play an important role in family life, demand for practical, reliable, and high-quality pet products is expected to remain steady.

For pet product manufacturers, exporters, and supply chain partners, this trend presents meaningful opportunities. A growing pet population and high household penetration continue to support demand in categories such as pet travel, pet housing, accessories, and other functional solutions. At the same time, buyers are paying closer attention to product quality, compliance, supply stability, and cost efficiency when evaluating long-term partnerships.

For companies serving international pet markets, Australia and the broader Oceania region remain strategically important. Businesses that can combine innovation, dependable manufacturing, and efficient supply chain support will be better positioned to respond to evolving market expectations and capture future growth opportunities.
